Working under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) and the lead of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist), the Environmental Scientist (ES) applies scientific methods and principles to identify environmental problems and conducts scientific evaluations and investigations on issues of importance to the use of pesticide products in the State. Evaluates and summarizes scientific tests and studies submitted to meet Department's requirements for registration of pesticide products in the area of plant physiology and pest and disease protection. Develops and writes technical reports and prepares regulatory and compliance documents and correspondence.

Using federal guidelines and scientific standards evaluates and summarizes scientific data, technical reports, and pesticide product label claims in the area of plant physiology and pest and disease protection (efficacy and phytotoxicity of herbicides, plant and insect growth regulators, spray adjuvants, insecticides, fungicides, etc.). Using accepted scientific standards, performs environmental analysis, validation and statistical examination of submitted studies, determines whether the studies are complete, statistically and scientifically valid, and adequate to satisfy the regulatory requirements for the registration of the proposed pesticide in the state. Evaluates pesticide effectiveness in crops and foods. Collaborates and provides technical information to local, federal, and state agencies, industries and institutions. Identifies the nature and extent of potential hazards or adverse effects to be expected from the proposed use of a pesticide product for review by Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist). Prepares technical reports, regulatory documents, and technical publications related to or containing evaluation on pesticide data packages, and provides options for registration decisions.

Suggests mitigation measures for conditions determined to be unacceptable. Researches additional data needed to complete hazard mitigation assessment.

Conducts literature searches in libraries, computer databases, and department confidential data files to develop information necessary to the evaluation process. Responds to written, verbal and electronic questions from individuals or organizations.

In order to develop and maintain expertise in special data requirements and registration procedures for a variety of registration submissions and actions, attends training, scientific conferences, and confers with experts in the field. Participates in meetings, conferences with staff of other state agencies, representatives or registrants, university researchers and members of the public on the evaluation process.
