Growing and Preserving Cool Season Vegetables
Aug 29, 2019
Join us Monday September 9th 10:00-11:30 am at the Lodi Library for our Master Gardener and Master Food Preserver presentation. Call 209-953-6100 prior to 9/5 to reserve your seat and handouts.
Lodi Public Library, 201 West Locust Street, Lodi, CA
The San Joaquin Master Gardeners will talk about specific cool season vegetables. Living in the Central Valley our growing season is long which enables us to grow a variety of vegetables. Find out what to plant and when to plant for your winter crops.
The San Joaquin Master Food Preservers will speak on pickling vegetables. Pickled foods are either fermented in a brine which is salt or packed in vinegar. Heat processing is then required to destroy microorganisms that can cause spoilage and inactivate enzymes that may affect flavor, color and texture. Pickled foods includes: brined pickles, fresh pack pickles, relish, fruit pickles, sauerkraut and chutneys.

Gardening for Pollinators
Jul 23, 2019
Join us Monday August 12th at 10:00-11:30 am at the Lodi Library to learn about pollinator friendly gardening. Please call 209-953-6100 prior to 8/9 to reserve your seat. The class is FREE.
Lodi Public Library, 201 West Locust Street, Lodi, CA
The University of California Master Gardeners will talk about the various pollinators that visit our gardens and what we can do as gardeners to create a habitat that encourages them. Many of these plant’s blooms are nice to bring inside to enjoy (just make sure you leave lots outside for your pollinators) and we will also give you pointers on what to do to extend vase life so you can enjoy them longer. It is estimated that pollinators are needed for 90% of flowering plants and one third of human food crops. Unfortunately, the population of both native pollinators and domesticated bees are declining. The reasons are loss of habitats, disease, pesticide use and insufficient nutrition. By adding plants to your landscape that provide food and shelter, as well as developing pollinator friendly landscape practices, you can make a difference.

Berries are not only “Berry Delicious” they are extremely healthy for you. Quoted from Oregon State University “Scientists have found berries have some of the highest antioxidant levels of any fresh fruits (measured as ORAC), and kale and spinach are the only vegetables with ORAC values as high as fresh, delicious berries. Fresh berries are some of the most powerful (and delicious) disease-fighting foods available.” More detailed information on the health and nutritional benefits of berries can be found at: http://berryhealth.fst.oregonstate.edu/health_healing/fact_sheets/

Growing CA Natives - May 21st Stockton
Apr 22, 2019
Do you want to find out which plants thrive in our San Joaquin Valley? Do you often find yourself going to a nursery and becoming overwhelmed by the plant selections? The University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of San Joaquin will be giving a free class on the California Natives that thrive in our valley. They will speak about how to select, plant and care for those plants.
This class will be hosted by the San Joaquin County Ag Center on Tuesday May 21st 10:30 – 12:00 pm. These free Master Gardener classes fill up quickly, so please call early to reserve your seat, 209-953-6100. The Ag Center is located at 2101 E. Earhart Ave, Stockton, 95206.
“Choosing the right plant for the right place is a phrase one will often hear from a Master Gardener”, says Sherida Phibbs. “We have all experienced bringing home plants and watched as they wither and die in our landscapes. Most of the time this is because they were not suited for your garden’s conditions.” Not all plants sold at local big-box stores are suitable for our climate.
Our speaker, Nadia Zane, will be speaking about the benefits of the California native plants and about the UC Davis Arboretum All-Stars. The All-Star plants have been grown and tested at the Arboretum and have proven to be reliable, easy to grow, have few problems with diseases and pests and don’t need a lot of water. To be considered an “All-Star” the plant must be attractive for most of the year.
